Crownhill Fort is a fascinating and enjoyable day out for all the family. Built in the 1860's to protect Plymouth from attack from both land and sea the fort is one of the largest Victorian forts in the Country. Crownhill Fort is fully open for the public to explore the rabbit warren of tunnels and passages, the four fighting levels and the 32 gun positions many of which have real working cannons. The fort is brought back to life for visitors every day at 1.30pm when guides wearing authentic Victorian costumes perform the gun firing parade. The fort building itself has fascinating exhibits telling the story of military history as well as recreated Victorian and WWII barrack rooms to give visitors an idea of what life was like for British soldiers. With stunning views from the ramparts, an outdoor adventure area with its own castle, café and gift shop there is certainly something for all the family at Crownhill Fort. |
