The railway was opened in 1898 and closed in 1935.  It was built to a gauge of 1ft 11½in (600mm), and ran for 19 miles between Lynton and Barnstaple.  It is now owned by a Charitable Trust and is run "not for profit", with most of the key roles undertaken by volunteers.  So far one mile of track has been reopened.
