SIDMOUTH EAST DEVON
Sidmouth's attraction lies not only in
the unspoilt and less commercialised town but also in the natural
beauty of the coastline, countryside and the gardens which more
than once have earned it the 'Britain in Bloom' award. The area
is one of Britain's loveliest, for relaxing in, walking around the
town, or touring more extensively in the West Country.
Explore the fascinating Jurassic Coast
- recently designated a World Heritage Site (ranking alongside the
Great Barrier Reef, and the Grand Canyon!), where the earth's history
is displayed in the coastline's geology and spectacular fossils.
This area is an excellent touring base
to visit the profusion of charming villages such as Branscombe and
Beer. Explore the rolling countryside, majestic sweeps of moorland
at Dartmoor and Exmoor, and visit the many fascinating National
Trust properties including Killerton and Castle Drogo. The Historic
towns of Lyme Regis, Ottery St Mary, Honiton (the Antiques Centre
of the South West) and the Cathedral City of Exeter are all within
easy reach.
The Littlecourt owes its historic beginnings
to Charles II and his mistress Nell Gwyn. Their son was created
1st Duke of St. Albans and his direct descendant the 5th Duke built
Violet Bank Cottage, which is now intact as part of Littlecourt
Cottages. In 1802 the property was left to the 5th Duke's son Lord
Amelius Beauclerk, Admiral of the Channel Fleet and attendant to
King George III at Weymouth.
