Bed and Breakfast Accommodation
East Allington
Kingsbridge
- Dartmouth - Devon
Luxury B&B accommodation and sailing holidays in Devon
can be found at Lower Norton Farmhouse. Situated between Dartmouth, Kingsbridge
and Totnes in the heart of the stunning South Hams countryside.
Reached
by a steep and narrow drive with high banks covered in wild flowers, Lower Norton
is the perfect secluded country retreat for lovers of birdsong and complete tranquility.
Lovely Georgian building, some parts of which are over
400 years old, Lower Norton Farmhouse has undergone considerable restoration
over the last few years.
Close by, the ground floor bedroom probably
started life as a calving pen, and its large bathroom was one of the farms' dairies,
still with the meat hooks in its ancient ceiling.
The lounge has comfortable sofas, music, colour tv, books,
magazines, a big open fire in winter, and a calm and relaxing atmosphere.
Tea, coffee and homemade cakes are available at any time. From the dining
room French doors lead on to the covered terrace, where you can sit in
easy chairs and enjoy a drink or evening meal overlooking the pond. All
in all, a wonderful location for bed and breakfast accommodation
ACCOMMODATION Upstairs in the oldest
part of the house, we found a George III penny in a pile of grain under the floor,
suggesting this was originally used as a store for animal feeds. The
room is now a twin bedroom with lovely restored brass and iron beds, crisp white
cotton bedding, a splendid old window, old pine furniture and en-suite shower
room. The two double bedrooms have wonderful antique kingsize beds, one Italian
with ornate, delicately carved wood panels. The other is
French Louis XV style with deep buttoned curved ends in pink velvet. The luxury
bathrooms have large powerful showers with soft white luxury towels. BreakfastBreakfast
time is flexible and will be any combination of fresh seasonal fruits, local fruit
juices, cereals, traditional cooked breakfast with local sausages, bacon and eggs,
homemade or local bread and homemade preserves. Evening Meal After
a busy day out you may prefer to stay in and relax over a candlelit dinner. Glynis
is an excellent cook with many years experience. As with breakfast, local organic
produce from our farming neighbours and local fishermen is almost exclusively
used. Special diets can be catered for, and if you have a particular favourite
we will be happy to create it for you. South Hams
A special feature at Lower Norton is the possibility of
a day out visiting a local National Trust property traveling in
a vintage Bentley. For anyone who does not wish to drive at all, we can
meet you at the nearest mainline station (Totnes) and organise all your
excursions.
If you would like to be
really different and slip back in time, you could travel by mainline train to
Paignton where you can catch the local steam train to Kingswear. We will meet
you in the vintage Bentley, take you across the River Dart on the historic lower
ferry and on through the lanes to Lower Norton where suitable refreshment will
be waiting. Lower Norton is in the heart of the lovely South
Hams countryside which is a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The
area is a mecca for birdwatchers with Slapton Ley Nature Reserve fresh water lagoon
just yards away from the sea at Start Bay and Bowcombe Creek a few minutes drive
away.
At Lower Norton, Buzzards frequently soaring overhead are
a wonderful sight and cheeky swallows sometimes race in and out of the
buildings playing tag! Only a short distance away are the many delights
of Dartmoor, historic houses and stunning gardens. The pretty local
towns of Kingsbridge (visit the museum), Totnes and Dartmouth
are only a short drive away.
After a day out sight seeing or on the beach, relax on
the terrace and watch the fish or wander around the grounds enjoying the
tranquility and wonderful scenery before dinner.
