A family run Country House with a
relaxed and friendly atmosphere, within Dartmoor National Park,
an area of outstanding natural beauty.
Lydford House has been welcoming guests
for over 100 years and was built by the celebrated artist William
Widgery (1822-1893), standing in 8 acres of delightful gardens and
pastureland in the historic village of Lydford close to the Devon/Cornwall
border.
ACCOMMODATION
There are nine spacious well-equipped en-suite bedrooms
as well as a charming self-catering apartment: the Nest.
The rooms include , 5 doubles, 2 twins and a family
suite consisting of a double with adjoining twin all en-suite. All
rooms have tea & coffee making facilities, hairdryers, colour
TV, etc. with most rooms having free access to broadband wireless
internet. A twin and a king ground floor room is available and one
of our superior rooms has a four-poster. All of our rooms are non-smoking.
The house is surrounded by extensive gardens and
grounds where you can stroll and get to know some of our resident
horses, hens, cats and goats or sit on the patio next to the ponds
and relax to the sound of the waterfalls and enjoy a cream tea.
There is a large private car park. On cooler evenings have a glass
of wine or beer around the log fire in our elegant guest lounge
and make friends with our friendly collie, Toby and red setter,
Gypsy.
STABLES
Situated in the grounds, the Stables offer a holiday
for you and your horse. We have 13 good size boxes, a sand school
and tack room. There is ample parking for lorries and trailers.
Your horse comes at no extra cost, apart from any
feed or hay you may required. The moors at the top of the lane provide
superb hacking with spectacular views from the nearby tors, alternatively
there is excellent riding in the nearby Lydford forest and along
the many hidden bridal ways that traverse the area.
LOCATION
There is much to see and do in the immediate vicinity
as well as further afield in the beautiful counties of Devon and
Cornwall.
LYDFORD
The village of Lydford dates back to King Arthur
in the 9th century who built a fort here, the site of which is now
occupied by Lydford Castle which was erected in 1195. It was in
fact used as a rather notorious prison until 17th Century. Besides
the castle stands St Petroc's church, named after a Celtic missionary.
The present church dates from the 13th Century, look out for the
Watchmaker's Tomb with its famous inscription. Lydford Gorge belonging
to the National Trust attracts over 75,000 visitors a year. It is
a haven to plant and wildlife. The gorge is a magnificent walk and
includes the 100 foot waterfall White Lady and the swirling whirl
pools of the Devil's Cauldron.
OKEHAMPTON
A market town 7 miles from Lydford which also has
a castle established by the Norman's and rebuilt in the 14th century.
The remains owned by English Heritage are the largest of their kind
in Devon. The town has an interesting Victorian Shopping Arcade
and the Museum of Dartmoor Life is worth a visit.
WIDGERY'S NEST
Nestling under the eaves of Lydford House is a cosy
comfortable second floor apartment enjoying lovely views of the
woodland and the tors beyond. Accommodation comprises one double
bedroom with ensuite shower room, twin bedroom available on request.
Kitchenette, lounge/diner with a sofa bed sleeping a maximum of
four people. Amenities include electric heating, electric cooker,
microwave, fridge, dishwasher and TV. Bed linen and towels along
with all power included in the rent. You have full use of the gardens
and grounds as well as stables and sand school if your horse comes
too. You will be more than welcome to use the hotel facilities for
breakfast, cream teas or drinks, as well as enjoying the best of
Italian cuisine in La Cascata restaurant. Non smoking, pets welcome.
