Appledore North Devon

Appledore was described by the author Charles Kingsley as the 'little white fishing village'.Located on the junction where the River Torridge meets the River Taw.

The town is full of "olde world" charm - an ancient fishing village with a rich maritime history. The village was granted port status by Elizabeth I, in recognition of the villages contribution in the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

As you explore Appledore's maze of narrow cobbled streets and pretty fisherman's cottages, many now colour washed in an array of pastel shades, you are bound to succumb to the quaint appeal of this picturesque North Devon town. Appledore's streets have a fine collection of galleries and craft shops.

Appledore was a centre for seafaring activities from mediaeval times, a stroll along the quay-side offers a glimpse into the heritage, views of Appledore Shipyard and across the water to neighbouring Instow.

During the reign of Elizabeth I, Appledore along with Bideford, were the two largest importers of tobacco. The picturesque Quay is still the centre of life in the village, with many activities including fishing trips, crabbing contests etc taking place. The village has a variety of pubs and cafes.
