Axminster, is a pleasant, unspoilt Devon market town that has charm and character. The town has many interesting and attractive streets radiating out from the town square and the Minster church of St Nicholas.

Axminster is linked in history to the carpet that bears its name. The carpet industry was started in 1755, by Thomas Whitty whose factory produced the highest quality, custom made carpets for the country's stately homes and mansion houses.

Shute Barton Manor (NT)

Just to the south west of Axminster is the National Trust property of Shute Barton Manor. The house with its battlemented turrets is one of the most important non-fortified manor houses in the Country.

Shute Barton was constructed circa 1380 and has been occupied by the Carew Pole family since the 16th century. The manor claims to have the largest example of a fireplace in England (and possibly the world)! The fireplace is 22 feet (6.6 meters) in width and stands 7 feet (2.1m meters) in height.
