Here you can relax for a while and enjoy some interesting and different shops, self guided town history trail or riverside walks. Character inns supply fine real ales and food whilst tea rooms, restaurant and atake away cater for wider refreshments needs. Colyton was a prosperous wool town owned by Henry Courtenay - Marquis of Exeter in the 16th century. When Henry Courtenay disagreed with Henry VIII, he was executed and his family forfeited the land. Twenty local farmers and merchants, then, purchased the manor from the Crown - by Deed of Feoffment. To reach Colyton, today, you can travel from the nearby town of Seaton via an open-topped electric tramway.

Once in Colyton you can wander through the towns interesting array of buildings ranging from the 14th to the 19th centuries - including the Old Church House; the Old Court House, where the famous Judge Jeffreys tried the local members of the Monmouth Rebellion; the Great House with its chequer board façade and the Tudor Vicarage.
