Dartmoor National ParkDartmoor Country Code

The following caution is given to enhance your experience of the Dartmoor National Park.

Please observe the Country Code:

  • Enjoy the countryside and respect its life and work.
  • Guard against all risk of fire.
  • Keep dogs under close control.
  • Keep to public paths across farmland.
  • Use, gates and stiles to cross fences, hedges and walls.
  • Leave livestock, crops and machinery alone.
  • Take all litter home.
  • Help to keep all water clean.
  • Protect wildlife, plants and trees.

The Army leases a large section of the northern moor, which it utilises as a gunnery range. You can get details of the firing programme from Dartmoor National Park Information Centres. Do not pick up any metal cannisters when walking on the moor.

When waking on the moor, please ensure that you are properly equipped; clothing, waterproofs, maps, compass, whistle, torch and first aid kit.

Please adhere to the 40mph speed restriction; when driving across the moor.

Pease do not feed the ponies - for their own safety. Feeding encourages them to wander onto roads leading to accidents. Often food given to them by visitors is not suitable and can lead to illness.
