Ivybridge - Devon

Ivybridge is a small town in South Devon located between the South Hams and the southern slopes of the Dartmoor National Park. The town is in a picturesque location, on the River Erme, surrounded by beautiful countryside and moorland. Ivybridge takes its name from the bridge that spans the river.

The main A38, Plymouth to Exeter trunk road, passes just south of the town, giving Ivybridge excellent links to the whole of South Devon, Exeter, Torbay and the English Rivierra (Torquay, Paignton) The South Hams (Dartmouth and Salcombe) and Plymouth.

This is an area that has a rich history and heritage - particularly in Milling and Cloth making, with the fast flow of the River Erme providing the power for the town's mills. Ivybridge is mentioned as early as 1280 with the medieval packhorse bridge, listed as a crossing point on the upper stretches of the River Erme.

From this humble beginning, the small town developed and by the 1700s, Ivybridge was established as a coach station (with traveller facilities such a hotel and stables) on the Exeter to Plymouth route.

The scenic splendour of Ivybridge's Packhorse bridge was captured on canvas by Turner.

The original bridge was superceded in the early part of the 19th century (1819) with the construction of a new sturdier and wider bridge across the river. The original medieval packhorse bridge - is still there - forming a picturesque diversion that is well worth visiting.

The town centre has a number of traditional public houses and inns to relax in, offering local speciality beers and ales and fresh local produce. The promotion of locally grown produce is a strong theme in Ivybridge and locally produced food and quality locally produced arts and crafts are promoted both in the local restaurants and retail outlets and small independent retailers.

Dartmoor National Park and the Two Moors Way

Ivybridge is the gateway to the South Western section of the Dartmoor National Park - a great place to begin your exploration of the moors.

Ivybridge is also the start of the Two Moors Way - a long distance walking route that crosses the National Park, taking you from Ivybridge up to Lynmouth on the North Coast in the Exmoor National Park. The two Moors Way is a 102-mile route that is ideal for a weeks walking holiday. The route is well marked with route markers and information boards along its whole length.
