Nestling in the beautiful gently rolling East Devon countryside, Ottery St Mary is a charmingly unspoilt town.

Ottery St Mary is one of the south-west's oldest towns, dating back over 1000 years. The towns streets are narrow and winding, giving 'Ottery' a special character. The town has many examples of fine Georgian buildings, especially around the eastern end of the church.

The jewel in Ottery St Mary's crown is the magnificent collegiate church of St Mary. Set on a hill overlooking the town, this 13th century church began its life as a humble parish church. In 1338 John de Grandisson, the Bishop of Exeter, began its radical reconstruction; modelling it on Exeter's Cathedral - creating a sanctuary for piety and learning.

Much of John de Grandisson's redeveloped St Mary's was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, but the Grammar School was later to be re-established in the town. During the 18th century Rev John Coleridge was appointed as Master at the school; later becoming the vicar. Rev John Coleridge fathered a total of 13 children, the youngest - born in 1772, was the famous poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Close to Ottery St Mary is Cadhay House is a classic Tudor manor house that was redeveloped in a Georgian style. The owners of the property supported the wrong side during the Civil War, causing them to fall into dept and the houses fortunes to decline. The house eventually becoming a boarding house in the 19th century. Cadhay House was restored to its full grandeur in 1909.
