Westward Ho! is a popular North Devon Holiday destination
- based around a safe family beach, which extends for over two miles.
The Beach at Westward Ho! is easily accessible
from the car park and is ideal for swimming and surfing. There are also
pools in the rocks which have been adapted for swimming. Golden Bay
as it is known, has a distinct pebble ridge, which marks the boundary
between the beach and Northam Burrows Country Park.
Golden Bay has good facilities, including a cafe, toilets,
deckchair hire, first aid, lifeguards and a lost child centre. There
is access for people with disabilities and a pay & display car park
which also has disabled parking spaces.
The wide expanse of firm compacted sand means that the
beach at Westward Ho! is always busy, with a wide range of activities;
bathing, surfing, canoeing, kite-surfing and para-karting are just some
of the sports practised here. One of the most eye catching parts of
the beach are the rows of traditional beach huts. Westward Ho! was named
after the book of the same name written by Charles Kingsley in the mid
1800s.
The town itself is a "traditional" holiday resort and
as such has many of the traditional holiday diversions on offer; amusement
arcade, putting green, playground, beach shops, snack bars and seaside
pubs.
From Westward Ho! there are stunning views across the
Taw and Torridge estuary towards Saunton and beyond the pebble ridge
there is the stunning scenery of Northam Burrows Country Park and the
Golf Course.
